How to make Turkey Sweet Potato Chili

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add ground turkey and cook, breaking it up, until lightly browned and cooked through. Season lightly with salt and pepper.
  1. Add onion and bell pepper to the pot. Cook for 4–5 minutes until softened. Stir in garlic and tomato paste; cook for 1 minute to caramelize. Add chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, cinnamon, and cayenne. Stir constantly for 30 seconds to release aromatics.
  1. Add crushed tomatoes, broth, sweet potatoes, and beans. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a gentle simmer. Cover and cook for 25–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sweet potatoes are tender.
  1. Stir in apple cider vinegar or lime juice. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Simmer uncovered for 5 minutes if a thicker consistency is desired.

Storage

Store the cooked turkey sweet potato chili by allowing it to cool completely before transferring it to airtight containers. Refrigerate for up to 4 days, noting that the flavor will continue to improve as it sits. Freeze individual or family-size portions for up to 3 months, leaving a bit of headspace to allow for expansion. Thaw frozen chili overnight in the refrigerator, then reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave, stirring occasionally and adding a splash of broth or water if needed to loosen the consistency.
