How to make Caramelized Onions

In a large skillet pan, slowly melt your butter on medium heat. Add in the sliced onion and cook them for 15 minutes while stirring every couple minutes. This step is mostly to cook the water out of the onions.

Sprinkle a little sugar over the onions when most of the water has evaporated. Turn the heat down to medium-low heat. Keep stirring every 2-3 minutes for even cooking.

Stir and cook for another 25-30 minutes to complete the caramelization process.

Once the onion have a nice dark brown color, remove from the pan.

Assemble the French Onion Hot Dog

Start by cooking the hot dogs. Learn all the ways you can cook hot dog wieners in this article, How to Cook Hot Dogs (allrecipes.com).

Someone cutting a croissant in half.

Line a baking tray with aluminum foil and place the croissants on the tray. Use a serrated knife to cut the croissants down the middle (from the top), almost all the way through.

Open up each croissant and spread the mustard on one side, and the mayonnaise on the other.

Place a cooked hot dog wiener in each croissant.

Wedge in a couple slices of Brie cheese on one side of the wiener, and caramelized onions on the other side.

Sprinkle some grated mozzarella cheese on top of each prepared hot dog.

Turn on the oven broiler and make sure there is a rack in the middle position. Place the baking tray on that middle rack, so that the cheese can melt slowly, without burning. Remove the tray from the oven when your desired golden color has been reached.

Substitutions

  • Croissant - Replace the croissant with a brioche bun or a regular hot dog bun.
  • Weiner - Use your favorite hot dog which fits your diet, like veggie, beef or chicken.
  • Caramelized Onions - Purchase premade Caramelized Onion at the grocery store t save yourself lots of time in preparing these hot dogs.

Storage

Place any leftover French Onion Hot Dog in an airtight container and refrigerate for 2-3 days. Keep in the freezer for up to a month, and heat them back up at 300F in a toaster over, or regular oven if wanting to reheat and keep the crisp texture.
